The Free Extra cannon balls setting lets you choose a reserve of shots. Apply your amount, start playing and aim at the remaining targets.

The game uses its regular shots first, then draws from your reserve. The regular shot counter can stay at zero while extra shots remain available.

What does Extra cannon balls do?: It gives you a reserve of shots to use after a stage's regular cannon balls run out.
Is this unlimited ammunition?: No. You choose a finite reserve, and extra shots use that reserve.
